Giant Eagle Foodperks

Thanks to Carol, Christine, Devon and Sandy for letting me know about the BIG news about Giant Eagle Foodperks!  (Sorry if I missed anyone!)

The Giant Eagle Foodperks Program will be ending.  We will no longer be able to get a percentage off of our groceries from buying gas.

It looks like February 13th will be the LAST DAY you can earn Foodperks and you will have to redeem them by May 31st.

However, you CAN still earn Fuelperks by buying groceries (10¢ for every $50)!  Plus starting February 7th you will get 3¢ Off at the pump with your rewards card when you are not redeeming fuelperks.

So…..what do you guys think about this?

I would be more upset if they took away the fuelperks so although I’m not pleased with the news, It’s not horrible news.  I think that there are probably times that I spent more than I normally would just to get my total up so I would save the most….doesn’t make sense, does it?!   Plus, there are still so many great deals to be had just by using coupons – look at how long the Round-up of the BEST Giant Deals Post is!

As long as they don’t take away double coupons……I’m good :)

My one year savings for everything was around $5,000. Only about $100 or so was from food perks. I never really spent enough money to make use of them. Even with the food perks, the meat was still priced high, so I always went somewhere else for that. A little disappointing, I guess, but not too big of a loss.

That is SOOO Similar to mine! I got coupon in the mail today with my savings from last year and the total savings was $6,183 and the foodperks part was only $111.67! So yea, not a huge part of the savings!

Giant Eagle must be trying to go out of business. Not only are their prices way higher than other local stores like Marc’s, Walmart and Target, their sales are getting lousier and lousier.

Have to admit, I used to shop at Giant Eagle all of the time. I think when I really started cutting back was when they changed the Catalina deals so they wouldn’t go off of the sale price. I mostly just go to Aldi now. I pay a little more, but it is so much less work.

I wasn’t happy with their sale this week–I figured I’d hang onto my grocery money til next week–the only thing I really wanted was their ground meat at 93% lean this week.

Better than Kroger’s news yesterday of stopping doubling coupons in the Cincinnati area (where I just moved from).

Well it could be much worse. I hope that’s the only thing they do away with. Now if only they would stop changing things on us!

I never saved much from food perks because they never went off the gross only off after they deducted all your coupons which I thought was crappy–Since the 20% foodperks got scraped off the trucks like a month ago Tammy and I figured they were going–if I hear anything else I’ll let you know :( No double coupons would suck, but I have noticed GE’s prices are getting somewhat out of hand and I’ve been looking to the Sparkles and the Valu Kings (which is owned by GE) for some deals–if you’re fortunate enough to have a Valu King near you, when GE doesn’t sell enough of their “sale” product it gets shipped to the Valu Kings to get it moved–usually it’s at a much cheaper price that GE and with a single coupon it takes it to where GE’s woulda doubled–Sparkle markets here in Ohio (although some in not so nice locations)–also have some incredible deals and they double coupons up to 99 cents–For example they have Kraft Cheese on sale $1.78 this week and with a double coupon–makes for an awesome deal–I like GE cause it’s on the way home, but when my grocery budget is blown out of the water because I don’t have coupons for any reason–I’m not a happy camper :(

I see no reason to get gas there anymore then. Much cheaper places around me. Thanks for the update, this was news to me.

It seems the price of gas is similar at all the nearby gas stations, however, I would tell my hubby he better go to Get-Go so I can get my food perks :) Now, he will probably just go to sheets since it’s a little more convenient and less crowded (maybe Get-Go will be less crowded now too – haha).

lol we can hope! Get go’s get crazy and I end up at circle K–there is a 15 cent gas difference between the get go in ravenna and the get go in streetsboro and they’re like 13 miles from each other

I don’t mind the loss of foodperks (like others, I just haven’t found them particularly worthwhile); just don’t take away double coupons, GE!!

Interesting about the 3¢ off fuel when not redeeming perks—exactly the program Sheetz uses. Here in Johnstown, they just built a big shiny new Sheetz right at the front door of the Richland Giant Eagle. Coincidence? :-) That GE also recently became a corporate-owned store, as did the one in the West End of town. And prices went up immediately! Bakery donuts that used to be 59¢ are now 89¢ each. Our not-so-old Wal-Mart is a DIVE, with one of the highest retail theft rates of all Wal-Marts, so I avoid it unless desperate. Market Basket has FABULOUS prices, but refuses to take internet coupons :-(

I braved the weather yesterday and visited my neighbor who is in upper management for GE. She said that the plans are to lower prices at Giant Eagle so they can be competitive with other stores. She even admits that GE’s prices are out of control. She also said that they are planning to use more of the the coupon mailings targeted at the specific products that each consumer uses. That would be
a good thing. I told her that I wasn’t impressed with the 3 cent discount on gas and she agreed with that.

Sandy that’s been the take that I’ve heard as well (my bf) works at GE with delivery–they are going to try to go back to their “absolute minimum pricing” or whatever they had before–supposidly the lady that was running GE isn’t anymore and David Shapiro and someone else are now running it because it wasn’t as profitable–so I do expect more changes :(

I looked at last year’s food perks on my card and I saved $427 on them, so I am quite upset over this. If they cancel their double coupon deal, this is one customer they will lose!

Wow! That’s a big savings! I agree about the double coupons :) I think Giant Eagle would lose a lot of business if they stopped doing that! In my area Kroger doubles but only up to 50¢ and Shop ‘n Save doubles up to 99¢, however the store closest to me is VERY coupon Unfriendly and they only accept like 3 internet coupons a day and will not double them.

I am glad it is going. Now I don’t have to worry about getting gas there unless I am using my fuel perks.

I agree with you. My GE is about 30 minutes away (20 for my hubby but he drives faster – lol) while other gas stations are much closer. I would try to wait to get gas until I made it to Get Go and there were many times I would be so close to running out! I’d even stop at BP to put just enough in to make it to get go – haha! I won’t have to do that anymore unless I’m using the fuelperks.

This doesn’t really change anything for me personally- My grocery budget is $60/weekly and I very rarely go over that, so even if I had the Foodperks it never added up to much. I totally agree that GE’s prices are so inflated that it’s almost laughable. I tend to go to Walmart for certain things, GE for others and occasionally Marc’s- although some of Marc’s prices on things aren’t all that great either….not seeing too many “deeper discounts,” over there. I’ve noticed that my Walmart seems to be getting slighter better about coupons, but I don’t ever use more than 20 or so at a time anyway, so they only hate me a little. :)

I am SO happy to hear about this. My mom came home from work (she drives a bus and has a break obviously while the kids are in school) and said that someone at her work told her that they were ending the fuelperks and I couldn’t believe it. I was so upset but then came on here and I am not happy foodperks is ending I am extremely happy that it is not fuelperks ending

LOL:) It was funny to read that you were SO happy about this until I read thru the whole comment….I agree! I would MUCH rather have fuelperks than food perks
